How To Start A Blog For Free

Starting a blog is one of the easiest things to do nowadays. With all of the different content management systems and free websites, you can be producing content within minutes! Blogging has become one of the most popular ways to reach out to new audiences and attract a readership. Blogs can be used in almost every single aspect of someone’s life, whether it is a personal diary blog, a business related blog, or even a political blog, they can appeal to any demographic.

Benefits of Using Free Blogging Services

Free blogging services such as Blogger.com or WordPress, will be able to provide an easy and free way to write about any type of subject that you are interested in. The first and most obvious benefit would be that it is free. It won’t cost you a cent, and you will have access to large audiences once you get your content known throughout the “Blogosphere”. If this is the first time you have decided to make a blog, then it is a great way to get introduced to the whole concept. It might take some time to fully understand what it takes to create and maintain a successful blog, but the more time you put into it, the more you will get out of it.

Most free blogging services also provide extensive tutorials about how to get started. This makes it much easier to understand and will be able to give you step by step instructions about how to design your blog. Although most free services have very limited options, it is still a great place to start. Once you understand the basics, you will have other options such as different layouts and some of the websites even allow you to change your overall theme.

Another great benefit is that some of the free services will help you to attract new readers. Usually by exposing your content within the website, you can easily find people to read and comment about your writing. Also, if you are new to search engine optimization, then you will have some good tutorials about it and depending on the website you choose, you may even get a bump in the ranking for using reputable sites.

There are plenty of benefits that come along with using the free services, don’t think that just because you pay for a website and your own blog that you will get a head start.

Downside of Using Free Blogging Services

There are some downsides to using these free blogs, but it is mostly just cosmetic. For example, you have a limited about of design and layout options when you are using a free blog, so your specific free blog might not stand out as much as a blog on your own domain name. Although you don’t have full access to any design you want, you will still get a good amount of options to help personalize it.

One of the biggest complaints about using free blogs is that it is always attached to another domain name. So if you are with WordPress.org, then you will always have WordPress.org attached to you domain name. This really hinders a lot of business blogs that are trying to attract customers because it doesn’t look as professional and a blog that has its own domain name. It can also be harder to promote the blog.

Another downside is the limited about of plugins and add-on programs you can use. These are additional snippets of code that can really help a website become the best it can be. With countless amounts of them already made, you will only have access to a certain few that are compatible with the free service that you are currently using.

If you have a large readership and decide that you finally want to take the leap and make your own website, you won’t be able to transfer any of the content or readers to your own website. This can be a really big pain if you do decide to expand the blog, but at the same time, you might be able to convince your current readership to support you by following your new website. Just don’t expect to be able to have everything transferred over.

Steps to Starting Your Free Blog

Now that we have gone over some of the main benefits and downsides of using free blogging services, let’s take a look at how we can actually start the blog. Like I said in the beginning, this is one of the easiest things to do, so don’t expect it to take a long time.

First, you want to choose a blogging service. The two most popular services are WordPress and Blogger.com, both have similar processes to create your blog so I will use blogger.com as an example.

1. You should make a Google account first, so when you go to blogger.com, it will allow you to log in. You can also set up the blog first, but you will eventually need to make a Google account as well.

2. Once you have created a Google account, next is to sign up with blogger.com to set up your blog. This is just general information.

3. Then you can name your blog. You should name it something that will attract readers and that relates to the subject that you intend to write about.

4. You will then have different template options to choose from. They are pretty straight forward, they will provide examples of how your blog will look.

5. That’s it! You now have your own blog, you can start making posts whenever you would like!

6. Once you get the hang of it, you can start to customize your blog with different design options and personalize it.

I told you it was easy! You can now explore the world of blogging without any hesitation. Don’t forget to review all of the tutorial options that are available to you, especially if this is your first blog. You will get tips and tricks to attract and keep readers, provide quality content, and also how to promote your blog.
